Amaranta Idina de Winter born April 20th to D'Artagnan and Leonia de Winter. Her name has numerous meanings but it it the Spanish version of the Greek name "Amaranth" or "Amara". Amy doesn't really like her name, often going by the nickname Amy to those who know her. She also thinks that the meaning is a load of crap. She has no tattoos or piercings but she does have a small scar on the back of her left thigh from a childhood injury.

Anything Else?
Amy is the type of person who will respect others provided they show her respect. She is intelligent, a quick learner and is able to pick up spells very quickly. Most of her intelligence, however, is faced with History. She is a History nut in a lot of ways, often travelling to find out what she can and to see things first hand. Amy is outspoken about her beliefs, if someone is attempting to preach their beliefs or change her mind then she will tell them what she thinks of them. As a child she was an advanced witch for her age but now it has levelled out. She isn't average and she's still in search of knowledge but she isn't as far above people as she use to be. She has a sharp tongue which often stings people when she starts snapping and being completely nasty. She can be sarcastic, and this tends to irritate people, but it usually only happens when she's particularly irritated or thinks someone is an idiot. She tends to be a quiet but forceful presence in a room. Often saying nothing but, in that silence, giving off this demanding, strong, presence that few people would expect from her. She is the kind of woman you watch, even if you're friends with her, because she never reveals too much about her.
Amy is creative and extremely imaginative. She loves writing and uses it as a way to vent her emotions, though she doesn't let anyone see her emotions or her stories. Often she will write factual texts as well, having pages upon pages of research that she has clipped together to form these books. Most times they are under lock and key in a trunk that she keeps beneath the floorboards of the manor house that belonged to her parents, never for the eyes of anyone, not until she considers them completed. She is secretive, keeping things to herself unless someone needs to know and even then there is no guarentee she will mention it. Everything she tells a person is carefully calculated to get them to react in a certain way or to find out something about them. She reveals what needs to be told only when it can no longer be held in. She is a silent observer, often quietly watching others from the shadows or behind a book, just watching and waiting, though what she is waiting for has never been clear to her.

Important Memories:
Amaranta "Amy" de Winter was born in late April in Oulu, a village that belonged to Sweden until the late 1800s when it came under Russian rule. Her parents were from mixed race backgrounds, her father Italian and Spanish, her mother Italian and Finnish, but she embraced each culture, learning as much as she could. She was born into an arranged marriage, her father, D'Artagnan, was a Duke, her mother, Leonia, a strange woman whose father held a high profile government position. Despite this, however, her childhood wasn't all that spectacular. Her mother held a lot of old worldly views and she was the typical trophy wife and her father a Magical Historian. To this day, despite the fact that she never hated the woman, Amy still finds it difficult to think highly of her mother, even after death. Although she was from an upper class family, Amy learned many skills that would enable her to survive should she, for some reason, be left without money. This was her father's idea, for the most part, given that he knew how fluid money could be. From an early age, Amy connected with him more than anyone else in the family, even her siblings. She had his familiar traits, both in personality and appearance, and she loved the Historical texts he kept in the study. They bonded, much to her mother's distaste. Leonia soon got over it, though, welcoming another son and daughter into the family after Amy.
Five children were a handful but the age differences made it somewhat easier on the de Winter parents. From birth, Amy was betrothed to Charles Langrish II, a wealthy business associate and the son of one of her mother's friends. The betrothal did not come to fruition, however, thanks to her father. Amy has never been certain just what went on in that meeting but after Charles was discovered to have been swindling money and taking more than his share, D'Artagnan didn't want a thing to do with the family. Leonia was not impressed, but she said nothing. She had learned better, or so she liked to believe.
"My mother was very particular, and in a way vain, when naming us. Each of our names is the Spanish form of a Greek name that holds some significant meaning. This meaning was, as I later found, what she hoped for us. In a way it defines our personalities just a tiny bit, or something about us. I am not sure how it works but I guess when they say you grow into a name, they mean it. I do find it rather amusing how we did fit our names, though. My brother Alejandro, his name means 'protector and helper of mankind. It comes from the name Alexander or Alexis. His protection of mankind? He saved a child from a fire by freezing the flames. My brother Nicolas, his name means 'a leader in victory'. The name is from the Greek, Klaus. His victory was taking his school Quidditch team, which he was the captain of, to numerous wins. Leandro, his name means 'lion man'. I'm not sure what my mother was hoping for with that one but, it is from the name Leander. He now works at a Muggle zoo, breeding Lions. Then there's my sister, Catalina. Her name means 'pure' from the name Catherine. Needless to say, she is unwed and virginal. I do not fault her for that, though. My name? Amaranta comes from the name Amaranth, meaning 'an unfading flower', and Amara, meaning 'unfading or eternal beauty'. I simply look a little younger than my years and didn't get grey hairs around the age my mother did. I don't think you can call that 'eternal beauty' I will show age eventually, I'm sure. I am still young, yet."
Being born, and living, in Finland put Amy in a prime location to attend Durmstrang. While her father was, initially, against it, he caved when her elder brother first attended. The school had no doubts about accepting them, given the status of the family and their blood, but the undertones of dark magic were enough to make Amy uncomfortable. Still, she discovered later on that it wasn't as bad as it seemed and she fast began to accept the school. Taking an extra interest in History and Ancient Runes it was clear that she was going to follow in her father's footsteps from the very beginning. Her mother did not approve, she was too old fashioned in her mindset, and that caused some clashes in their personality. Friendships during her school years were rather tense, if they existed. Amy was an outcast, preferring to be on her own, withdrawing from people and developing a somewhat hard shell. The occasional people snuck through, however, and they are people she's stuck with since the beginning. Following graduation she went on to study her Masters in History and Ancient Runes, two courses that she completed simultaneously, against her father's advice. She burned herself out, the stress, the sleepless nights, and when she finally took the final exams she barely made it home. Thankfully, the hard work paid off and she passed, but it wasn't without a price. Amy was ill from the lack of sleep, the inconsistency in her diet, the stress, and spent two months on bedrest to recouperate. She's learned not to push herself so hard.
"My last two years at Durmstrang were two of the best in my life, at least academically, but I made the mistake of running myself down after that. My father had advised against it but I never really listened, not then. I think, looking back, I should have paced myself, taken an extra three years to finish the second Mastery. I didn't need to do them one after the other, the overlap in the middle meaning that I was studying for exams while starting a new Masters course. I wasn't eating properly, I wasn't sleeping properly, I think some days I looked a bit like an inferious. It was worth it to achieve in the end, though. I'm not saying I would go back and do it again, I have no desire to put myself through that, but the rewards were worth it. I think my next point of call, if I decided to go back and study anything else, would be Potions or, perhaps, Charms. Both are quite interesting subjects, especially when it comes to the creation and development, though I do love History as much as the next... Oh, wait, that doesn't really work does it?"
Shortly after turning twenty six, and nearly running herself into the ground studying for her Masterys, Amy decided it was best to take a break, for a year or so. Her father had been planning a trip to various historical locations and Amy, gratefully, went along with him. Visits to Ancient Battlefields, to Stonehenge, to other magical locations were what filled her days for the year they were travelling. It was magical, at least for her, and she enjoyed every second of it, documenting her trip and doing vast research on everything that she could. It was partway through this trip she decided to start writing, to share her knowledge with whoever might read it. She still refuses to let people see, until it is finished, but she has the works to this day. This trip, however, would be the last that her father would take. Already an older man when his children were born, D'Artagnan was getting on in years and, about three months before returning home, he passed away in his sleep. Amy, unwilling to let his research go unpublished and his body rot in some foreign country, returned home immediately. D'Artagnan was buried in the family plot and Amy set about finishing her father's book. The final chapter. It was published shortly after his death and the proceeds went to Amy. His will had been discovered and the fact he'd left everything partaining to his research and the subsequent earnings, to his daughter, drove a wedge between her and her mother. The resulting argument lead to them not speaking for two years until a death bed reconcilliation nearly two years after her father had passed. Instead of continuing her father's research, however, Amy decided, after her mother's funeral, that she was going to extend the knowledge to a younger generation. Moving to Ireland, into the old home her father's family had owned, Amy took up the Ancient Runes teaching position at Hogwarts and she's been there for the last year.
"I think that travelling was the best decision I made. Not because it meant seeing places but because it meant spending the final few months with my father. We'd always been close and I hate to think of just what would happen if there was no-one there to bring him home. He had told me once that he always wanted to be a teacher, to share his knowledge with a younger generation, and I could relate to that. I understood him, and he I, on a completely different level to the others in the family. My mother blamed me to some degree, but it was just hysteria really. She'd been with the same man, in the same routine, for over thirty years, it was something that was hard to let go of. Two years later and we lost her as well, on her death bed we did sort through some issues, she apologised, but things were never the best between us. I don't miss her like I miss my father, but she was my mother and I will always love her, despite that. I can be a bitch, I have a caustic tongue, but my family sees this calm natured, loving side, that no-one else does."
Currently, Amy has been teaching at Hogwarts for the last year. Twenty nine years old she started and she has just started her second year. She meets some resistance from students, especially since she is somewhat harsh at times, but she has never had a student fail an N.E.W.T in the class. She likes to make things interesting, having both practical and theoretical sessions. It is her belief that history should not be dull and when she gets into that mode she is the kind of person who you want on your side, who you'd be glad to learn from. She takes her father's approach to a lot of things, teaching as she believes he would, and often using his books, or quoting them, as assigned texts. She gets asked, more often than not, why she didn't just start teaching at Durmstrang and Amy has never really had an answer for it. Something called her to Ireland, to Britain, and she prefers to be there, so she is.
"My father's lesson was simple: Do what you love and don't let anyone hold you back. I try to live up to that each day, and teaching was something that I always wanted to do."
